Oklahoma City Thunder Begin Championship Defense with Nail-Biting Overtime Victory

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander in action

The Thunder star joined Oklahoma City back in 2019.

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander scored the decisive points late in a second overtime period as the defending champions opened their NBA title defense with a narrow victory over the visiting Rockets.

Last season's MVP poured in 35 points, including two clutch free throws with just 2.3 seconds left in the second overtime, securing the titleholders a positive start.

Houston's Alperun Sengun led all scorers with a game-high 39 and also connected on a career-high five three-pointers.

But Chet Holmgren, who added 28 points, was instrumental alongside the game's hero.

"Determination and defense," Gilgeous-Alexander said of their performance. "We know that when we do it defensively we give ourselves a chance no matter what's going on—shots, missed attempts, good luck or bad luck. We did enough defence to secure the victory. We're pretty rusty, but it's a good start."

Prior to the game, Oklahoma's title banner was unveiled at their arena, while the squad were presented with their title rings.

Oklahoma City beat the Indiana Pacers in last season's championship series. It was their maiden championship since the franchise moved in 2008 to OKC from Seattle, who had won the 1979 title.

The Pacers will have the chance to secure some payback on Friday when they face the Thunder, while the Rockets are back on court on the same day at the Pistons.

In other action, a massive performance of 43 points, 12 boards and nine assists from the Slovenian star was insufficient to prevent his new team the Lakers from falling to a 119-109 defeat against the Warriors.

Miami's star scored 31 points and Stephen Curry added 23 points for the road team.

The Lakers were without the league's top scorer James as he is recovering from a back issue.
